In remarks in New Mexico on Saturday, Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) accused his opponent of taking a “victory lap.”The Obama campaign denies that they've written such a speech of course, and if you think about it for even half a second it doesn't make a whole lot of sense that they would have. If nothing else, there's going to be practically three months worth of stuff going on in the world between Election Day and Inaguration Day, some of which might end up being relevant enough to reference in a President's first speech. Even if they have somebody working on one, though, I can't really see the upside for McCain in pointing out just how far ahead in the game Obama is -- maybe Barry looks overconfident for a minute, but pretty soon that just turns back into regular confidence in the eyes of the public. Besides, overconfidence didn't the hurt the last guy with the electorate. I don't want to jinx anything, but McCain just makes me feel more confident about November 4th every time he opens his mouth.
“Well, my friends, when I pull this thing off I have a request for my opponent,” McCain said, according to Reuters. “I want him to save that manuscript of his inaugural address and donate it to the Smithsonian and put it right next to the Chicago paper that said, 'Dewey Defeats Truman.'”
Just remember, it all ends more or less like this.
